A person who shops at Walmart thinks the store is purposely breaking the self-checkout machines to make shopping there harder. They believe Walmart wants people to pay for a membership called Walmart+ by making things inconvenient. One of the benefits of this membership is that you can scan items with your phone while you shop.

A TikTok user named Honest, with the username @longway1217, shared a video on TikTok that got really popular. In the video, he’s waiting in line at a busy Walmart store. He thinks the reason it’s so crowded is because people don’t want to sign up for Walmart+. He says that even though the store closed its self-checkout machines, nobody wants to pay every month just to shop there.

“This is what Walmart looks like now that they’ve turned off those scanners. But look, nobody’s using those quick checkouts, bro,” he says. “Nobody wants to pay every month for this stuff, bro. What are they thinking? We’ll just wait in this line.”

In a caption for the video, Honest said they wanted to know if shutting down the scanners has helped stop stealing at Walmart stores.

“I really want to see if this stops theft,” he wrote.

In December 2022, Walmart CEO Doug McMillion said that if theft keeps going up in some places, they might have to close those stores. The next year, 24 stores closed, The Street reported, with 8 of them in Illinois (four of those in Chicago) and also in Washington D.C.

Many people on TikTok have talked about stealing from the self-scanning kiosks at stores like Walmart and Target, or they’ve warned others not to try because they’ll eventually get caught.

One TikTok user even said that stores like Walmart and Target might let people steal small things until the total value of what they’ve taken adds up to $750 or more, so they can be charged with a serious crime.

There have been problems with Walmart’s self-checkout machines for a while now. Some people have said that the machines make mistakes and charge them for things they didn’t buy. The code shows up on the receipt, but there’s no item to go with it.

When the TikToker mentioned Walmart’s monthly membership plan, Walmart+, it seems like they’re saying that the store is making regular shopping there more annoying on purpose. They think Walmart is trying to push people into buying these memberships.

One Walmart customer shared a really angry review of the store’s “plus” membership, saying it’s ridiculous to have to pay just to shop there.

But some people think Walmart is getting rid of self-checkout kiosks to push more people to use the Walmart+ app. If you’re used to the convenience of scanning your own items, you might feel like you have to sign up for Walmart+’s $12.95 monthly plan now.

Different people had different reactions to Honest’s video about the self-checkout situation. One person said they haven’t seen any pressure to buy memberships at their Walmart.

“I’ve never seen a subscription for self-checkout at any Walmart,” they wrote.

“I think Walmart is just trying this out in a few stores because a lot of places still let you use self-checkout for free,” another person said.

But some people didn’t get why everyone’s so mad at Walmart online. They said if you’re really upset with a store, just stop shopping there.
