The lacrosse team at Tufts University is getting lots of mean comments on social media because they’re playing in their yearly Pride game.

Pride events in sports are happening a lot, but now they’re causing arguments because some players and fans don’t want to join in. For Tufts lacrosse, people are talking about it because the university announced they were having Pride lacrosse games in April, and both the men’s and women’s teams played in them.

On April 6, @TuftsJumbos tweeted: ‘Today our lacrosse teams, @TuftsLacrosse and @Tufts_Lacrosse, are having their Pride Games for the 2024 season! Good luck to both teams!’ They also said, ‘We’re excited to celebrate our LGBTQIA+ community at our games today!!

Some people didn’t like the tweet and said the Tufts lacrosse teams were being “political.”

Now that Tufts’ men’s lacrosse team is going to play in the NCAA championship game next week against Rochester Institute of Technology, more people are paying attention to them. This attention made homophobic comments increase. Casey D’Annolfo, the team’s head coach, shared screenshots of homophobic comments on one of the team’s recent Instagram posts.

“One person wrote, ‘I’m really upset with the liberal ideas this program supports. They keep pushing their liberal beliefs on us, which is really bad, and we should do something about it as a lacrosse community.’ They also said a derogatory term about gay people.

Another person used the hashtag #TuftsRuinedLacrosse.

D’Annolfo also said the homophobic comments were not okay.

‘I’m really happy that we’re playing in another National Championship, but I’m disgusted by the hateful comments on our social media,’ D’Annolfo tweeted today. ‘It’s okay if you want to root against us, but spreading hate speech is not okay. Grow up.'”

He also criticized social media accounts that “keep spreading hate, bigotry, homophobia, and exclusion on lacrosse pages and anywhere else,” and said he supports the LGBTQ community.
