What is TV nowadays? Is it just what’s on regular channels and cable? What about streaming services? Yeah, they count as TV too. But wait, don’t we also watch movies on streaming platforms, on our TVs? Am I TV? It’s all getting mixed up, that’s my point.

And now, the awards scene is catching up. Three popular YouTube shows are eligible for Emmy awards this year.

First up is “Good Mythical Morning,” made by Rhett McLaughlin and Link Neal (aka Rhett & Link). They tried to get into the talk show category in 2018, but now they’ve made it into the outstanding short-form comedy, drama, or variety series category.

It’s no surprise, really. “GMM” has gathered over 32 million subscribers since it started in 2012, with over 2500 episodes made. That’s almost as many as “Grey’s Anatomy”! If there was an award for the most YouTube-like hair, they’d probably win that too.

Amelia Dimoldenberg’s “Chicken Shop Date” is also up for an award in the outstanding short-form category.

Dimoldenberg has been in the spotlight lately for her work with the Oscars, but her main thing is meeting celebrities at local chicken shops for a chat, whether it’s awkward, casual, or even a bit flirty.

“Most women who work in media are beautiful and accommodating and bubbly and personable,” said Amelia Dimoldenberg, a comedian and YouTube host. “Now that would be a real performance for me.”Credit…Charlotte Hadden for The New York Times

Starting in 2014, “CSD” has 88 episodes so far, including nine that are eligible for awards this year with guests like Paul Mescal, Cher, and Sean Evans from “Hot Ones.” Speaking of…

“Hot Ones” has managed to get into the outstanding talk show category alongside big names like Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel/Fallon.

You know “Hot Ones.” It’s the show where host Sean Evans asks celebrities questions while they eat insanely hot wings.

We’ve lived through like four different new media generations,” said Sean Evans, the longtime host of “Hot Ones,” “and we’ve been able to ride those rocky waters, but just in like the smoothest way.”Credit…Peter Fisher for The New York Times

It’s fitting that the show will compete in the late-night category, especially since one of its biggest episodes this year featured a former late-night staple, pushing things to the extreme.

Good luck to these pioneers of new media as they try to outshine whatever HBO puts out this year. Actually, HBO famously said they’re not TV, so maybe they shouldn’t get Emmys. You can’t have it both ways.
