Nick Carter and Aaron Carter’s rise to fame and their struggles are explored in the new docuseries Fallen Idols: Nick and Aaron Carter. Melissa Schuman, a member of the pop group Dream, accused Nick Carter of raping her in 2003. After she made her accusation in 2017, she found support from Kaya Jones, who dated Carter while she was in the Pussycat Dolls.
In a clip from the new Investigation Discovery docuseries shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Jones revealed that she reached out to Schuman in 2017 after hearing her story. Jones was bothered by the detailed allegations against Carter and the attempts to discredit Schuman. She wanted to hear Schuman’s side directly. Jones, who left the Pussycat Dolls in 2004, contacted Schuman through Twitter, offering her support and speaking with her for hours. Schuman appreciated Jones’s kindness and the reassurance that her life wasn’t over.
Carter’s attorney, Dale Hayes Jr., called the claims made in Fallen Idols “outrageous” and noted that Carter’s countersuit against his accusers is still pending in court. Hayes said the cases are working their way through the legal system and expressed confidence that Carter will prevail and hold the accusers accountable for spreading falsehoods.
Schuman first made her allegations public in a 2017 blog post, stating she was an 18-year-old virgin when Carter raped her. Carter denied the rape allegation, claiming any sexual encounter was consensual. In February 2023, Schuman was included in a countersuit filed by Carter against another accuser, Shannon Ruth, who sued him for alleged sexual battery. Carter accused the women of taking advantage of the #MeToo movement to defame him for attention and money. In April 2023, Schuman sued Carter for sexual assault and battery regarding the 2003 incident. Carter’s attorney dismissed the lawsuit as a “PR stunt.” Both lawsuits are ongoing.
In the Fallen Idols clip, Jones recalls tweeting a warning to Carter in 2017, suggesting she knew damaging information about him. She believes something terrible happened to Schuman based on her own experiences with Carter. In a previously released trailer for Fallen Idols, Jones says she knows things about Carter “that could burn his whole house down” and described him as capable of evil actions.
The four-part docuseries covers the Carter brothers’ rise to fame, their personal struggles, and includes interviews with accusers and family members. It airs on May 27 and 28 from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT on ID and streaming on Max.
