Former First Lady Melania Trump has been quiet lately and wasn’t expected to attend this week’s Republican National Convention.

After the assassination attempt on her husband, former President Donald Trump, she released a rare statement calling for unity.

I am thinking of you, my fellow Americans,” she started. “We have always been a special union. America is currently divided, but your bravery and common sense can bring us back together as one.”

She expressed her condolences to the families of those killed or injured at Saturday’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and described the shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, as “a monster who saw my husband as just a political figure.”

In her letter, Melania urges people to move past “different opinions, policies, and political games.”
