Who is Douglas Emhoff ?
Born on October 13, 1964, just a week before Kamala, Douglas is a well-known lawyer at DLA Piper and a dedicated family man. In an interview with Marie-Claire, the divorced dad of two described himself as ‘a lawyer, a guy, a father,’ but emphasized that he’s ‘not a politician.’ He also shared with CBS News:
“I’m her husband. She has plenty of people giving her advice on her role. I’m just there to support her and be there for her.“
Even though he’s not into politics, Douglas is a strong supporter of his wife.
Kamala Harris, Joe Biden’s Vice President, has been married to Douglas Emhoff for nearly 10 years now. They will celebrate their 10th anniversary in August.
How did Kamala meet her husband?
In her book ‘The Truths We Hold,’ Kamala shared how she met Douglas in 2013. A friend, Chrisette Hudlin, set them up on a blind date, saying she had met a ‘cute man’ who was perfect for Kamala.
“He thought his voicemail was a disaster and figured he’d never hear from me again. He had to stop himself from calling back to leave another long message explaining the first one.“
They finally went on their date, and Harris said she liked him ‘immediately’. Emhoff didn’t waste any time and sent her an email with his available dates for the next few months. He was very clear about his intentions. According to Harris, he wrote in the email :
“I’m too old to play games or beat around the bush. I really like you, and I want to see if we can make this work.“
They dated for a short time before getting married in 2014. Now, they have a very ‘modern’ family together.
Douglas Emhoff has two kids, Cole and Ella, who are 26 and 21, from his previous marriage to Kerstin Emhoff. It looks like Harris gets along really well with them. She doesn’t like being called ‘step-mom,’ so the kids call her ‘Momala’ instead!
In a 2019 essay for Elle, the Vice President talked about her relationship with her husband’s ex-wife:
‘Kerstin and I really hit it off and have become good friends. We often cheer together at Ella’s swim meets and basketball games, which sometimes embarrasses Ella. We even joke that our modern family is almost too functional!’
