Being Avril Lavigne’s clone replacement must be tough nowadays. People keep bothering you about this conspiracy theory that you took over as the pop star from the early 2000s two decades ago. And all the while, you have to keep denying it and trying not to wink at the camera.
So, what’s the deal with this Avril Lavigne conspiracy theory?
Well, back in 2011, a Brazilian fan site suggested that Melissa Vandella, an actress supposedly hired by Lavigne to handle paparazzi, actually replaced her after her supposed death in 2003. The theory goes that Vandella has been pretending to be Lavigne and denying the accusations in her best Avril impression.
As expected, the internet has latched onto this theory:
Now, let’s be real here, for the sake of clarity, the whole theory is pretty out there. Avril Lavigne is still the same old Avril Lavigne. Recently, she appeared on Alex Cooper’s podcast “Call Me Daddy” and naturally, the topic came up.
“It’s funny to me,” Avril said. “Some people say, ‘You look exactly the same, like you haven’t aged a day!’ Others think there’s a conspiracy theory that I’m not me.”
But host Cooper wasn’t as chill about it.
“Avril, this conspiracy theory about you is a little creepy, come on,” she said.
To which Avril responded, “I don’t know, it could be worse. Obviously, I am me. It’s so dumb.”
In the world of celebrity conspiracy theories, Lavigne’s perspective makes sense. Let’s not even get started on the more harmful internet rumors about other celebrities. Compared to those, the whole Avril Lavigne clone thing seems pretty harmless. If it’s believable enough for the Beatles…
On the music front, Lavigne recently appeared on Nate Smith’s “Bulletproof.” (Or did she?!)
