In the movie “The Idea of You,” Anne Hathaway portrays a 40-year-old divorced mother who falls in love with a 24-year-old boy band singer played by Nicholas Galitzine. During an interview with “Extra,” both Anne and Nicholas discussed the film, showcasing Nicholas’ remarkable singing skills. Despite speculation linking the story to Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde’s previous relationship, Anne dismissed the rumors by saying, “No, just no.” For Anne, the film revolves around the theme of healing from a broken heart.
She explained that in the movie, her character had her heart broken by her ex-husband, and it wasn’t just her heart that was hurt. She had invested a lot in her family. There’s a part in the story where it mentions she used to please others, and she made mature choices along the way. She became a mother at a young age and was determined to raise her child well. Despite facing challenges, she did a great job raising her child and building a successful business. However, when her husband betrayed her, she began to question if she was ever truly loved. It’s difficult to live with that kind of uncertainty for a long time.
In this relationship, she thought it would just be for fun at first,” she continued, “but then she realized it meant more. To fully be a part of it, she had to make sacrifices.”
Nicholas had to sing in the movie.
Anne praised, “He’s a great singer… You were amazing right from the start.”
Remembering his audition, Anne shared, “He had to sing during the audition, and not only could he sing, he brought his own guitar. He was absolutely… There was a song we suggested for auditions, but he had a different one in mind. He said confidently, ‘You’re going to hear me sing this.’”
Nicholas confessed, “I completely forgot about that. The song chosen didn’t match the artistry Hayes wanted.”
On the possibility of taking boy band August Moon on tour, Nicholas teased, “There’s a slight issue as I’m the only singer in the band, but the others are amazing dancers. I’m willing – I adore those guys. They are incredibly talented dancers. You only see a glimpse of their abilities. Yes, we would love to go on tour.”
Anne loves pop music and mentioned, “Growing up in the pop music-rich era was the best. We were all in Madonna’s world.”
I remember singing Madonna all the time, which drove my mother crazy,” Hathaway shared. “I was a fan of Madonna and Britney. ‘Total Request Live’ was a big hit during my high school days, so I loved coming home to watch music videos.”
Nicholas chimed in, “I miss that great era. My sister and I would come home and watch MTV, enjoying music videos for hours. Even on holiday in Greece, we would tune into MTV and immerse ourselves in awesome pop artists.”
“The Idea of You” premieres on Prime Video on May 2.
