“On Thursday, Angelina Jolie attended the premiere of ‘The Outsiders‘ in New York City, accompanied by her daughter Vivienne, who served as a production assistant for the musical.
In an interview , Angelina, accompanied by Justin Levine, the book and score creator, discussed Vivienne’s role. Jolie joked, ‘Viv ended up spending more time with Justin than with me, so you can see by her choice of attire which team she’s on… She’s part of the music, writing, and greaser team.'”
Justin praised Vivienne, expressing, “Let me tell you something about Viv. Viv is truly exceptional, one of the most remarkable individuals I’ve ever encountered. She has a keen observational sense, perceiving people and the world in a unique way. So much of this show revolves around reconnecting with your inner child, and to work alongside this talented 15-year-old and hear her insights, while also learning the importance of speaking up when you have something to say and contributing positive energy to a space… She truly embodies wisdom beyond her years, one of the most insightful ‘greasers’ I’ve ever known.”
Angelina beamed, chiming in, “She’s indeed a wise little ‘greaser’.”
As Justin praised Vivienne, Angelina reciprocated with admiration for him. She remarked, “I’ve gained tremendous insights from Justin and everyone involved in this production. It’s been like going back to school, learning about the essence of being an artist and the process of creating. I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of this.”
Angelina highlighted the musical’s departure from the original book and film.
Justin expanded on the differences in the new adaptation, explaining, “While the book served as our guiding light, the show takes on its own identity. We each bring our own perspectives, as the show says, ‘We all come from different places. We all start from different lines.'”
Justin described how Angelina brought valuable insights to the musical, stating, “When Angie joined us, what I admired about her perspective was her willingness to question the status quo. She’d ask, ‘What about this? What about that?’ Even when met with resistance, she’d challenge with, ‘Well, why do you do it that way?’ or ‘I’ve had a different experience.’ The beauty of this show lies in the diversity of perspectives.”
Angelina fully endorsed Justin’s sentiment!
Though the cast affectionately referred to Angelina as a maternal figure, she attributed the leadership role to director Danya Taymor.
She expressed, “You know, they have an amazing director… She’s incredibly nurturing. She’s leading the team, and I’m fortunate to be in her company.”
Jolie expressed her admiration for the cast, effusing, “I have so much love and respect for them. They’re an incredibly talented, brilliant, and kind group of individuals.”
She stressed, “Truly, they are. It’s not just that they’re good people, which they are, and that’s rare. They’re not only a fantastic group of individuals, but they’re also incredibly hardworking and talented. I’m excited for everyone to see them, so please do come.”
Angelina also revealed that she designed some of the costumes for the show, including the one Justin wore. She mentioned, “It was enjoyable to do.”
