Hello summer! Hot days at the beach, pool, park, or having a barbecue in the garden are common now. But with summer comes more sweat. Sweat-soaked shirts and stains might embarrass you, but sweating is important. Dr. András Cseh, a skin doctor at Dermacare in Vienna, says, ‘We sweat to control body temperature. When we get too hot, sweating cools us down.’ Sweating also keeps our skin hydrated and maintains fluid balance. But those wet patches can be embarrassing.

Our body has 2 to 4 million sweat glands in places like the armpits, feet, hands, groin, and forehead. When sweat evaporates, it cools us. However, you don’t have to be too sweaty in summer. Follow these easy steps to sweat less and stay cool.

Put on an antiperspirant at night.

You might think deodorants and antiperspirants are the same, but they are different. “Deodorants are just for smell, while antiperspirants reduce sweating,” says Dr. Cseh. Antiperspirants have an ingredient that blocks sweat glands. Prescription antiperspirants do this better. You should put on antiperspirant at night when you sweat the least, so it works best.

Stay away from foods and drinks that make you sweat.

A cold beer or a chilled glass of rosé might seem perfect on a hot summer day, but they’re not great for people who sweat a lot. “Alcohol often causes heavy sweating,” says Dr. Cseh. He advises avoiding alcohol and caffeine, which also increases sweating, and suggests drinking electrolyte beverages instead.

Avoid spicy food too. “Alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods are the main culprits for causing sweat,” says Dr. Latowa, a general practitioner and aesthetic treatment specialist. “Alcohol and caffeine boost adrenaline, making you sweat more quickly. This is especially true for people with hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.

Try Botox to reduce excessive sweating.

Do you think Botox is just for wrinkles? It’s actually approved by the FDA to treat excessive sweating.

Botox can be used for areas like armpits, groin, scalp, and under the breasts,” says Dr. Olga Latowa. “It’s injected into the area and starts working in one to two weeks, lasting about four months. Botox for sweating is very safe, but you should see a doctor first.

Wear clothes that let air flow through to keep cool.

It might seem obvious, but one of the easiest ways to avoid sweating in summer is to stay cool. “Sweat happens because of heat, so the best way to avoid sweating is to prevent overheating,” says Dr. Cseh. “Wear light, breathable clothes, stay in the shade or air conditioning, and don’t push yourself too hard. Choose fabrics that let air flow, like cotton or linen, and avoid materials like nylon or polyester.

“Also, let your feet breathe. Cooler feet can help lower your body temperature, so avoid thick socks and heavy shoes in the warm months.”
